The U.S. Consumer Services and Enterprise Digital & Data Technology Team focuses on critical strategic technology capabilities in digital experience engineering (Mobile and Web), AI/ML, marketing technology, enterprise communications, travel and lifestyle, and automation. Grounded in data governance, it drives customer-facing features that deepen and expand digital engagement while enhancing technical capabilities across business areas and customer segments.

One Amex, a suite of products leading the “Amex in a box” concept, includes One XP—a powerful experimentation platform supporting A/B Testing, Canary Releases, and Feature Flag capabilities. We are seeking a Senior Engineer to join the One XP platform team.

With One XP, you’ll build technology products that transform how developers at American Express set up and manage experiments, measuring causal inference with precision. Following an immense growth in the number of experiments onboarded in 2021, we expect this growth to continue and accelerate.

One XP is an inner-source platform where we welcome contributions from engineers across the company. It provides developers with the tools to set up, test, and promote experiments across various environments (dev/test/prod) and visualize the data captured.

Our distributed team spans U.S. time zones, leading technological and cultural change across American Express.

As a Senior Engineer for One XP, you will:

• Build infrastructure to ensure consistent and powerful causal inference across a large-scale experimentation platform, working closely with teams across the company to enhance innovation through deeper user understanding.
• Collaborate with product and engineering teams to design and architect software for cutting-edge experimentation and inference, balancing customer needs with rigorous methodology.
• Develop sophisticated libraries and tools for accurate, large-scale experiment analysis, and implement pioneering causal inference techniques across hundreds of experiments.
• Participate in all software development stages, from architecture and design to implementation, testing, and on-call support.
• Work with Experimentation Data Science, Product, and engineering teams to solve complex causal inference challenges and deliver production-ready solutions.
• Foster the “Experimentation Culture” at Amex by enhancing the approach to experimentation and causal inference across the company.

What will you do in this role?

• Contribute to all technical aspects of software development, including design, prototyping, and coding assignments.
• Lead an agile team by driving software builds with best practices (tools, common components, and documentation).
• Lead design/code reviews and implement automated testing.
• Debug software components and resolve defects.
• Lead deployment, support, and monitoring across test, integration, and production environments.
• Empower teams to automate deployments and scale applications based on demand.
• Spend 70% of your time coding and hands-on technical implementation.
• Collaborate with Enterprise Architecture, Staff Engineers, and Delivery teams to define requirements and technical approaches.
• Drive technical designs and conduct design reviews.
• Identify and implement scalable foundational components and libraries, and improve existing platform elements.
• Actively participate in team and company-wide architecture and engineering discussions.
• Assist team members in overcoming technical challenges.
• Maintain schedules and sprint achievements.
• Analyze, design, program, debug, and modify software for cloud-based or Internet-related environments.
• Ensure the health and quality of code, including managing SCM, functional testing, and CI/CD integration.

Leadership:

• Take accountability for the team’s success, driving direction and prioritizing initiatives.
• Influence team members through creative problem-solving, risk-taking, and idea implementation.
• Act as a productivity multiplier by streamlining workflow and helping the team deliver faster and stronger results.
• Mentor and guide the team to success.
• Manage and mentor junior and senior engineers, ensuring adherence to team standards.
• Deliver quality products that meet customer needs.

Required Skills:

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field (advanced degree preferred).
• 7+ years of software development experience in a professional setting.
• At least 5 years of experience with Java or similar object-oriented programming language.
• 3+ years with another modern language (Node.js, JavaScript, Scala, Python, or Go).
• Expertise in application design, software development, and automated testing.
• Experience developing scalable, high-performance backend applications with Enterprise Java and cloud-native technologies.
• Knowledge of API design (GraphQL, REST JSON, XML, etc.).
• Familiarity with relational databases and cloud-native system design.
• Experience with Containers and Orchestration tools (Docker, Kubernetes).
• Familiarity with Event-Driven Systems, Kafka, Big Data, Data Pipelines, etc.
• Strong communication skills for documenting workflows and codebase areas.
• Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment, multi-task, and solve problems efficiently.
• Leadership experience in guiding engineering teams.
• Experience with high-performance database systems (Couchbase, Cassandra, Redis) is a plus.
• Hands-on experience with One Amex platforms (One App, One Data, One Stream) is a plus.

Experience with public cloud environments (AWS, Google Cloud, Azure) is a plus.

Salary Range: $110,000 – $190,000 annually + bonus + benefits

This range reflects the expected salary for the position, adjusted for location, experience, and other factors.
