Location: BD, Research Triangle Park, NC (Hybrid Role)

About BD:
BD is a global leader in medical technology, advancing the world of health™ with innovative solutions that shape the future of healthcare. We are a diverse and passionate team committed to creating transformative medical products that make a meaningful difference in people’s lives. As part of our Corporate Digital Engineering (DE) team, the Staff Engineer I plays a critical role in shaping the next generation of medical products, ensuring faster delivery through advanced physics-based simulations and material testing.

Role Overview:
The Staff Engineer I will contribute to the development and application of simulation capabilities within BD’s Medical, Interventional, and Life Sciences product development. This includes leading structural mechanics, material testing, and material data characterization efforts to ensure high-quality product outcomes. The role requires technical expertise, mentorship, and the establishment of best practices across the DE team and BD associates. Your work will directly impact product design and accelerate innovation at BD.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead physics-based simulation studies for nonlinear structural and multiphysics applications using FEA tools (Abaqus, ANSYS, COMSOL).
  • Develop, validate, and calibrate constitutive material models for both synthetic materials and biological tissues through structured testing and experimentation.
  • Design and execute experimental testing plans to validate simulation models and improve accuracy.
  • Automate workflows using scripting tools (e.g., Python, Matlab) to enhance efficiency and repeatability.
  • Integrate engineering tools (e.g., hand calculations, first-principles models) with simulation and testing to create optimal solutions.
  • Advocate for the value of simulation and materials testing within BD’s R&D community through internal communication, webinars, and external customer visits.
  • Stay at the forefront of simulation advancements, recommending new technologies and collaborating with external partners to refine predictive simulation tools and material testing techniques.
  • Foster a collaborative, cross-functional work environment with product development teams, stakeholders, and external partners.
  • Deliver clear, concise progress reports and technical documentation in the DE Projects database.
  • Continuously advance knowledge in simulation and materials testing through training, seminars, and conferences, presenting findings as a subject matter expert.

Qualifications:

Education:

  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or a related field (10 years of relevant experience).
  • M.S. (8 years of relevant experience) or Ph.D. (6 years of relevant experience) in a related field is preferred.

Experience:

  • Extensive experience with structural simulation tools, preferably Abaqus, ANSYS, or COMSOL.
  • Experience with programming/scripting in Python, Matlab, or similar languages.
  • Familiarity with tools such as HEEDS, MCalibration/PolyUmod, Kornucopia, Minitab, and nTop is preferred.
  • Experience in biological tissue modeling and/or testing, as well as using universal testing machines (Instron, CellScale), is a plus.
  • Knowledge of AI/ML model building and 3D CAD solid modeling software (SolidWorks) is advantageous.

Skills:

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, particularly in providing insights and guidance.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Expertise in applying simulation and testing methods to complex engineering challenges.

Location and Work Considerations:

  • Primary Location: Research Triangle Park, NC, USA
  • Hybrid Role: This role supports a blend of on-site collaboration and remote work.
  • Relocation: Relocation assistance may be provided for the right candidate.
