Together, we’re redefining what it means to be a leader in the digital space. Join us—and let’s lead the way together.

Technology at Amex: Where Ideas Power Innovation

Join a collaborative engineering culture that puts curiosity, creativity, and continuous learning first. As part of our U.S. Consumer and Digital Technology (USCDT) team, you’ll help design and build technologies that define how millions of people engage with American Express—online, on mobile, and beyond.

From AI/ML and automation to customer experience and cloud infrastructure, you’ll work with the latest tools to solve real-world challenges. You’ll be supported by teammates who value experimentation and fresh thinking, and you’ll have time carved out to invest in your own growth.

The Role: Principal Architect – Business Process Innovation

We’re looking for a forward-thinking Principal Architect to drive the architecture and evolution of our business process automation capabilities. You’ll lead strategic initiatives across process mining, robotic process automation (RPA), and intelligent case/work management—helping to shape the future of how Amex operates at scale.

What You’ll Do

  • Architect Complex Solutions: Design scalable, reusable, and innovative architectures that enable automation, workflow efficiency, and operational excellence.
  • Hands-On Engineering (25%): Engage directly with code, frameworks, and proof-of-concept development to validate technical direction.
  • Lead Platform Development: Influence platform roadmaps and partner with engineering teams to ensure successful execution and alignment with business goals.
  • Drive Innovation: Identify emerging trends in automation and AI, and translate them into enterprise-ready solutions.
  • Collaborate Cross-Functionally: Partner with business stakeholders, engineers, and fellow architects to ensure consistent implementation and knowledge sharing.
  • Mentor & Guide: Provide technical leadership and mentorship to engineers across multiple product teams.
  • Promote Best Practices: Advocate for architectural standards and ensure security, reliability, and scalability in everything we build.

What You’ll Bring

Required Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of experience in engineering or technical architecture within complex enterprise environments.
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field (Master’s preferred).
  • Advanced understanding of architectural disciplines including application, integration, data, and security.
  • Demonstrated experience designing, building, and deploying enterprise-grade software platforms.
  • Strong coding proficiency (Java, Python, ReactJS or similar) and a deep understanding of SDLC.
  • Experience with public cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP) and container orchestration.
  • Prior exposure to off-the-shelf automation solutions and build vs. buy analysis.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Preferred Expertise:

  • Deep knowledge of business process management tools and technologies (case management, rules engines, RPA).
  • Familiarity with process mining and automation frameworks.
  • Experience working with big data ecosystems and applying analytics, AI/ML to workflow optimization.
  • Understanding of high-throughput messaging systems and enterprise-grade APIs.
  • Previous experience in technical pre-sales, consulting, or managed services is a plus.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Base Salary Range: $170,000 – $255,000 annually
Additional Compensation: Annual bonus + equity (where applicable)
    Benefits Include:
  • 6% company match on retirement savings
  • 20+ weeks of paid parental leave for all parents
  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision coverage
  • Life and disability insurance
  • Free financial coaching and planning tools
  • Free access to wellness centers (location-dependent)
  • Hybrid work flexibility (Amex Flex)
  • Ongoing learning & development opportunities
