Salary Range: $110,000–$190,000 annually + bonus + benefits

About the Role

The Chief Technology Officer (CTO) Organization is on a mission to elevate technical standards, foster innovation, and amplify the technology heartbeat of American Express. Within this, the Technology Community Office (TCO) plays a central role—building a thriving internal and external tech community, promoting knowledge sharing, and championing engineering excellence.

We’re looking for a Senior Engineer – Quantum Computing to help lead our efforts in developing advanced quantum solutions for real-world financial applications. This is a unique opportunity to work at the intersection of finance and emerging technology, helping shape the quantum future at American Express.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and prototype quantum algorithms to solve complex problems in finance.
  • Collaborate across disciplines—including quantum scientists, data scientists, and financial engineers—to bring quantum solutions into production workflows.
  • Develop and maintain robust quantum software libraries, tools, and simulation environments.
  • Present research and findings internally and externally through talks, seminars, and publications.
  • Represent American Express at industry conferences and contribute to high-quality research outputs.

Required Qualifications

  • Ph.D. or Master’s in Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related field—or equivalent industry experience.
  • Minimum of 2 years of hands-on experience in quantum computing or quantum information science.
  • Strong grasp of quantum theory: algorithms, entanglement, and error correction.
  • Proficient in quantum programming tools such as Qiskit (preferred), Cirq, or Q#.
  • Advanced Python development skills, including production-grade software experience.
  • Solid foundation in discrete mathematics, scientific computing, and numerical methods.
  • Demonstrated contributions to peer-reviewed publications.
  • Excellent communication, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with hybrid quantum-classical methods (e.g., VQE, QAOA).
  • Familiarity with quantum hardware platforms and simulators.
  • Background in financial modeling, portfolio optimization, or risk analytics.
